It...

I must say I mostly agree with your rumination. It's a matter of degree. I tend to be too lax and "liberal" personally but I've been wrong quite often. In any event, I think China has a unique chance to experiment a new way of organising society. having tried a few millennia, I think we're qualified to experiment.

Furthermore, I do wonder why the US promotes democracy with so much angst, in words if not often indeed. To start with, democracy is vague term, telling me no more than “Christendom”, the “Islamic World”, or “the West” which, to America, should be Asia anyway. Besides the democracy banner, I fail to see much common between the USA, Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan, India . . . and so on. In the end, similar to other systems, I suspect we’ll find it fantastic for some, at some point in time, and disastrous for others, under different circumstances. Furthermore, any system, like the people who invented it, would age, turn insufferable, then die one day.

I don't think there are many out there who'd buy the "altruistic" reason any more, notwithstanding the evident "Missionary Complex" of the American empire. But even more selfish but pragmatic excuses such as "security" concerns don't makes sense. Nazi Germany was democratic and Christian, like the allies. So why do Americans risk lives and spend money to liberate strange people in faraway lands who often despise them for their efforts?

Democracy is a boisterous dead-end that flip flops between two identical acting parties. What can be achieved by an opportunistic politician in four years while any meaningful change in today's complex world would take much longer time and consistency, and painful compromises? Nothing. That's why "Change" is a laughable but popular slogan. I wonder what Obama would say what he has changed when it comes to time for re-election.

My conspiracy theory is that this entertaining and futile process suits the money power behind the political facade: The invisible power that controls everything in the US, including printing money. If the model can be repeated worldwide, so would their influence. Hence their uncanny fervour in promoting democracy, through the arms of the American people?

I wrote an essay on my blog on this too: www.guo-du.blogspot.com
